New agreement lets Facebook and Zynga play the field, still shack up

It wasn't so long ago that Facebook and Zynga were making beautiful music (and money) together, but it seems that each is now looking for a bit of fresh air in the relationship, according to Reuters. A new agreement will give Zynga more freedom to offer games on its own website, while also allowing Facebook to develop its own -- though for now, the social network said it "was not in the business of building games and we have no plans to do so." For its part, Zynga now has the option of opting out of Facebook's payment mechanism and display ads, according to a recent filing by the Farmville maker. Both companies have seen their share of foibles, lately, but Facebook would perhaps be wise to not let its main dance partner too far out of sight -- Zynga still kicks in more than 15 percent of the now-public company's revenue.

Haiti seeks to fix broken adoption system

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) ? Haiti is overhauling its adoption laws for the first time in nearly 40 years in an attempt to end practices that have allowed thousands of children to be trafficked out of the country or suffer from neglect as they languish in squalid orphanages.

The proposed legislation is meant to bring Haiti in line with international laws that seek to protect children under consideration for overseas adoptions, said Arielle Jeanty Villedrouin, general director of the government's social welfare agency. The legislation has gone before the Senate for review and awaits approval from both houses of Parliament.

The proposal includes a requirement that both biological parents give informed consent for adoptions. It also establishes Villedrouin's office as the "central authority" for all overseas adoptions, which is a requirement of the Hague Adoption Convention, and prohibits adoptions that aren't authorized by the government.

"A parent who wants to adopt a child can't just go to a website and say, 'This is a child I want.' The children aren't merchandise or cars," Villedrouin said in an interview.

Other reforms hope to help the child land in a stable home, including requirements that couples adopting a child must be married for five years, with one spouse at least 30 years old. A single person filing for adoption must be at least 35.

Adoptions will also only be permitted once all other forms of support for the child have been exhausted.

Ann Linnarsson, a Haiti-based child protection specialist with the UN children's agency UNICEF, welcomed the proposed changes.

"It will mean that the child being adopted needs a new family and that you will know this child has been screened," Linnarsson said. "There will be some accountability. ... The adopting parents will know that their child has not been trafficked or stolen."

The need for new legislation is acute in Haiti, where an estimated 50,000 children live in orphanages in part because many parents give up their children because they can't afford to take care of them.

Many orphanages are poorly run and have little oversight. U.S. missionaries managed to get the government to close one home last year in Carrefour, one of the cities that make up the Haitian capital region, after they noted that several children disappeared and the operators didn't offer credible explanations for what happened.

It's not entirely known how many Haitian children are trafficked into neighboring Dominican Republic or elsewhere. But UNICEF recently estimated that at least 2,000 children were smuggled across the border in 2009.

The changes were welcome news to Shasta Grimes and her husband, who have been waiting for more than two years to adopt a Haitian boy who's 5 years old.

"The laws they've had ? they've been up to interpretation," the 32-year-old woman said by phone from her home in Arcadia, Florida. "It's been really difficult for anyone to know what the standard is or the correct procedure is. With legislation in place it's going to really set in place an international standard."

The vulnerability of Haiti's children was dramatized in the weeks after the January 2010 earthquake when Baptist missionaries from Idaho tried to take 33 children they believed were orphans to the Dominican Republic. Police arrested the Americans for lacking the proper documents to take the kids, all of whom turned out had living parents and had been voluntarily turned over to the missionaries.

Even if the new legislation passes, enforcement may prove tricky. Officials have long complained that child welfare workers lack the resources and training to investigate allegations of criminal behavior.

Over the past year, Villedrouin said, the government has closed 26 orphanages for operating in substandard conditions. She said under the new law, more "sanctions will be taken."

Absent from the legislation is any reference to Haiti's informal internal adoption system, in which parents hand over their children to other families to clean homes and do other chores in exchange for money or school tuition. Between 250,000 and 500,000 children in Haiti are forced to work as domestic servants known as "restaveks," Haitian Creole for "stay with," according to the International Organization for Migration.

The government has created a "restavek" hotline for people to call and report cases of abuse, Villedrouin said.

Description Of Cricket

Cricket is one of the most famous games loved by many people around the world. People in India are crazy about cricket. Cricket is played on the ground with a rectangular pitch in the centre. It is a game of bat and ball. Cricket is played between two teams of 11 players. Depending on the toss, one of the team decides to bat or ball first. The team which bats first has to makes the target for the opponent team to score. The opposite team has to try to take the wickets and limit the runs of the batting team. The batting position changes every over. A bowler has to bowl six times to complete one over.

The batsman has to stand in front of the wicket for batting and has to preserve the three stumps also known as wicket from the ball to hit it. If a bowl touches the wicket than the batsman is declared as out (dismissed). There are many other ways to dismiss the batsman. If a fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground than the batsman is out. A wicket-keeper can touch the ball to wicket when the batsman is not crease, the batsman will be declared out. And also the batsman can be declared out if the ball had touched the wicket before the batsman has entered into crease while taking runs.

RingCentral embraces text messages with new SMS tools ...

Text messages. I send ?em, you send ?em, and most everyone who owns a cellphone sends ?em. The text messaging protocol, Short Message Service (SMS), has been used for everything from monitoring a shepherd?s flock to helping those affected by Hurricane Sandy communicate with loved ones and New York City officials. Now RingCentral, a cloud-based phone systems provider, plans to use the protocol to make it easier for workers to stay in touch with one another and their customers.

This new integration, set to go live for new customers in early 2013, allows businesses to combine their business, cellphone, fax, and office numbers into one. Users can then catch up on all of their correspondence via RingCentral?s iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry app, ending the format rigamarole that plagues anyone who has to juggle multiple methods of communication.

By adding text messages into the mix, RingCentral believes that it is making life easier for people who send and receive messages on a consistent basis. Customer service in particular might be particularly receptive to text messaging ? I have a suspicion that given the choice between ?conversing? with an automated system, holding and being transferred from person to person, or sending a text message, many frustrated customers will opt for the latter.

The company cited SMS? non-intrusive nature as a key driver for its inclusion into the RingCentral product. A customer could, for example, text their bank for support to fix an erroneous charge or incorrect balance while out to dinner, and the bank worker could respond to that message while working with other customers or during a moment when they are?indisposed. (RingCentral chose to go with ?in a meeting,? but I can think of another, less sanitary place where texting may be preferable to a phone call.)

Conversocial, a social media-focused customer service company we covered earlier this year, operates on a similar principle. Instead of asking an already-frustrated customer to go through an equally painful process to?solve their problem, why not make them happy and use their communication method of choice? (A word of warning, however: Be prepared to deal with a lot of ?text speak,? a displeasure I wouldn?t wish on my worst enemy.)

From a customer?s perspective, being able to receive support via SMS is great. The support specialist (or whatever politically correct label is applied to these workers today) may also appreciate this switch, and even if they don?t it?s just sour grapes ? the customer is always right. In this case, the thumbs are ready to cast their vote for SMS.

Youth Employment in Africa: An Interview with Dr. Shanta Devarajan?Part II

Dr. Shanta Devarajan, the chief economist of the Africa Region with the World Bank, recently sat down with emerging market investment consultant Wilmot Allen to discuss youth employment in sub-Saharan Africa. Part II appears today; Part I appeared on Wednesday.?

Dr. Shanta Devarajan, the chief economist of the Africa Region with the World Bank, recently sat down with emerging market investment consultant Wilmot Allen to discuss youth employment in sub-Saharan Africa. Part II appears today; Part I appeared on Wednesday.?

youth employment in africaThe international community has undertaken gender equality as an important initiative for addressing population growth, workforce development and economic development. The results of these efforts are apparent especially in the area of literacy, where in last two decades literacy rates for young females rose from 58 percent to 66.6 percent, compared to 72 percent to 78.4 percent for young men. How is the World Bank specifically addressing gender equality, particularly among young African women?

The World Bank is addressing gender equality by going beyond primary education, where as you say, there has been remarkable progress. We are strengthening women's access to secondary and tertiary education. More importantly, we are helping women entrepreneurs succeed by supporting their property rights, access to finance and complementary services. Research shows that women farmers, for instance, are as productive as male farmers when they have equal access to inputs. Finally, we are also trying to strengthen women's voice and agency, both within the household and in the community.

According to the UN, in 2009 the youth unemployment rate was at 11.9 percent in sub- Saharan Africa and 23.7 percent in North Africa, with young females being particularly adversely affected. Youth entrepreneurship is one approach to addressing youth unemployment in Africa. How can entrepreneurship be supported in sub-Saharan Africa and has the World Bank taken specific targeted action in this regard?

First, unemployment statistics are not a good indicator of the employment challenge in low-income Africa. The fact is that most African youth cannot afford to be unemployed. Instead, they work in the informal sector in low-productivity jobs. Entrepreneurship should be targeted at increasing the productivity of these people in the informal sector. The World Bank has been supporting youth employment programs that include apprenticeships, training, and mentoring, so these young people can start their own businesses or join an existing business. We have also been evaluating these programs to see what works and what doesn't. For instance, we found that the returns to women were much lower, because they entered low-paying professions such as sewing and tailoring. But when one enterprising woman created an all-female auto repair shop, the women who joined it earned significantly more.

How can the larger African diaspora, situated both within the continent and without, collaborate in promoting youth employment in sub-Saharan Africa?

The diaspora can help in several ways. First, they can support the education initiatives to boost the skills of young people entering the labor force. Second, they can bring their expertise to bear on entrepreneurship training for young Africans. Some successful business people have set up subsidiaries in Africa that train and develop budding entrepreneurs. Finally, they can lobby African governments to enact policies (and remove existing restrictions) that will boost productivity of African enterprises, including those in the informal sector.

Shantayanan Devarajan is the Chief Economist of the World Bank?s Africa Region. Since joining the World Bank in 1991, he has been a Principal Economist and Research Manager for Public Economics in the Development Research Group, and the Chief Economist of the Human Development Network, and of the South Asia Region. He was the director of the World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People. Before 1991, he was on the faculty of Harvard University?s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The author or co-author of over 100 publications, Mr. Devarajan?s research covers public economics, trade policy, natural resources and the environment, and general equilibrium modeling of developing countries. Born in Sri Lanka, Mr. Devarajan received his B.A. in mathematics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Wilmot Allen is Founder of 1 World Enterprises, an investment consultancy for emerging and frontier markets.?

Dealing with a breakup and friends - Relationships, Dating, & Marriage

Q: Hi Meredith,

My only relationship ever ended two months ago. We were together for more than five years, through our mid-20s. I had absolutely no idea the end was coming. We were best friends, we wanted the same things in life, we were making plans for the future, and he was talking about buying me jewelry literally the night before he told me he didn?t love me ?that way? anymore and maybe hadn?t for quite some time.

On the outside I?ve been holding it together pretty well from day one, taking his pictures off the walls, staying busy, spending time with my friends, trying and mostly succeeding to keep all the school-work-life balls up in the air. Inside, though, I?m still a wreck, and while we?ve cut off contact for now, not a day goes by that I don?t want to call him and see why we can?t try to fix what we had.

I?m doing everything I know how to do to move on, including seeing my therapist (for depression) more often, but even though the pain has lessened, it?s still a very real part of my day-to-day life. It?s been a long enough time now that it seems impolite to keep whining about it to my wonderful and patient friends. Shouldn?t this be better by now? Shouldn?t I be able to go just one day without thinking about him? Is there something else I could or should be doing, or is this just going to keep taking a maddeningly long time to get over? Thanks.

? Still Blue, San Francisco

A: Shouldn?t this be better by now? No.

Shouldn?t I be able to go just one day without thinking about him? No way.

Is there something else I could or should be doing, or is this just going to keep taking a maddeningly long time to get over? No and maybe.

It?s only been two months. You just got over the shock of the breakup and are finally beginning to process what happened. You need to have patience.

You mention your wonderful and patient friends, which is why I chose to run this letter. I?m impressed that you?re concerned about them and whether they?re annoyed by your constant sadness. That shows some serious empathy.

Your friends are supposed to listen to your breakup monologues ? that?s part of the job description ? but you should go out of your way to ask them at least three questions about their lives every time you see them. The question quota might seem silly, but it?s a good way to guarantee that you don?t alienate them while you?re going through this mess. It?ll also ensure that you?re getting a glimpse of the world outside of your head. Maybe you?ll hear a friend?s fun dating story and get excited about the prospect of meeting someone new. Or maybe you?ll just forget about your own pain for five minutes.

Your breakup is still so fresh. You need to just deal with it. But please stay on top of the friend thing and count to three with each of them.

You will recover from all of this, by the way. Just not yet.

Readers? Thoughts on being good to friends while you?re absorbed with your own breakup? Thoughts about how the letter writer can move this process along? Help.

? Meredith

Obama takes ?fiscal cliff? plan on the road: Weekend in politics

President Barack Obama takes his plan for avoiding the "fiscal cliff" on the road Friday with a tour and remarks at The Rodon Group Manufacturing Facility in Hatfield, Pa.

The White House is looking to drum up public support with the campaign-style event for a plan that includes $1.6 trillion in new tax revenues plus some $400 billion in savings in entitlement programs. It also folds in relief for Americans hit by the home foreclosure crisis and an extension of the payroll tax holiday and unemployment assistance. There's also a $50 billion jobs plan that's mostly infrastructure spending.

The White House definitely will be looking for a better reception Friday than the plan got Thursday when Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner presented it to Republican House Speaker John Boehner. Congressional Republicans rejected it as nothing more than the same plan Obama has been pushing since last year, including tax increases on the richest Americans, Yahoo News White House Correspondent Olivier Knox reports.

"I remain hopeful that productive conversations can be had in the days ahead, but the White House has to get serious," Boehner said. "This is not a game. Jobs are on the line. The American economy is on the line. And this is a moment for adult leadership."

[Want to get a daily update of what's happening in politics delivered right to your inbox? Sign up for our Daily Ticket newsletter]

The fiscal cliff is an automatic one-two punch of higher taxes scheduled to kick in Jan. 1 and deep spending cuts set to start the following day. Many economists say the economic recovery will be in jeopardy if a deal is not reached.

The fiscal cliff is certain to be the primary topic on the Sunday talk shows. One question likely to be addressed: Was the spirit of compromise that seemed present in Washington right after the election never genuine, and, even if it was, has it already disappeared?

Also worth noting this weekend: Saturday is World AIDS Day, and a Presidential Proclamation urges governors, U.S. territorial officials, and the American people to join in appropriate activities to remember men, women, and children who have lost their lives to AIDS and to provide support and comfort to those living with the disease.

And then there is this: President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are expected to attend the Kennedy Center Honors Gala on Sunday. This year's honorees are blues musician Buddy Guy, actor and director Dustin Hoffman, comedian and TV host David Letterman, ballerina Natalia Makarova, and rock band Led Zeppelin, with individual members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant each receiving the award.

And this: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid turns 73 on Sunday.

We doin' irie, mon: Rastafarian faith gaining more adherents in Jamaica

BULL BAY, Jamaica - The robed Rastafarian priest looked out over the turquoise sea off Jamaica's southeast coast and fervently described his belief that deliverance is at hand.

Around him at the sprawling Bobo Ashanti commune on an isolated hilltop, a few women and about 200 dreadlocked men with flowing robes and tightly wrapped turbans prayed, fasted, and fashioned handmade brooms ? smoking marijuana only as a ceremonial ritual.

"Rasta church is rising," declared Priest Morant, who wore a vestment stitched with the words "The Black Christ." ''There's nothing that can turn it back."

The Rastafarian faith is indeed rising in Jamaica, where new census figures show a roughly 20 per cent increase in the number of adherents over a decade, to more than 29,000. While still a tiny sliver of the mostly Christian country's 2.7 million people, Jalani Niaah, an expert in the Rastafari movement, says the number is more like 8 to 10 per cent of the population, since many Rastas disdain nearly all government initiatives and not all would have spoken to census takers.

"Its contemporary appeal is particularly fascinating to young men, especially in the absence of alternative sources for their development," said Niaah, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies.

Founded 80 years ago by descendants of African slaves, the Rasta movement's growing appeal is attributable to its rejection of Western materialism, the scarcity of opportunities for young men in Jamaica and an increasing acceptance of it.

For the black nationalist Bobo Ashanti commune, the Rastafarian faith is a transforming way of life, where Rastas strive to live a frugal existence uncomplicated by binding relationships to "Babylon" ? the unflattering term for the Western world. They share a deep alienation from modern life and Jamaica is perceived as a temporary harbour until prophecy is fulfilled and they journey to the promised land of Africa on big ships.

Life is highly regimented at the isolated retreat, cut off from most of the comforts of modern society. But it has a strong appeal for some, among them 27-year-old Adrian Dunkley, who joined the strict sect two months ago after years of questioning his Christian upbringing and struggling to find work as an upholsterer.

"This place is helping me a whole heap. I'm learning every day, and things are starting to make sense," the new recruit known as Prince Adrian said in the shade of one of dozens of scrap-board buildings painted in the bright Rastafarian colours of red, green and gold.

Other Rastafari adherents follow a more secular lifestyle, marked by a passion for social justice, the natural world, reggae music and the ritualistic use of pot to bring them closer to the divine.

A melding of Old Testament teachings and Pan-Africanism, Rastafarianism emerged in colonial-era Jamaica in the 1930s out of anger over the oppression of blacks. Its message was spread by the reggae songs created by musical icons Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear and others in the 1970s, and the movement has attracted a following among reggae-loving Americans, Europeans and Asians. Academics believe at least 1 million people practice it worldwide.

In the United States, the population of Rastafarians appears to be steadily growing due in part to jailhouse conversions, said Charles Price, associate professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the author of "Becoming Rasta: Origins of Rastafari Identity in Jamaica."

"I regularly get letters from inmates seeking information," Price said. "I also get regular invitations to talk to prisoners at local North Carolina juvenile facilities, often from chaplains trying to figure out what to do."

Besides the well-known ritual use of marijuana, Rastas endeavour to reject materialist values and practice a strict oneness with nature, eating only unprocessed foods and leaving their hair to grow, uncombed, into dreadlocks.

Most of its many sects worship the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, even though he was widely considered a despot in his native land and paid little heed to his adulation by faraway Caribbean people whose ancestry tended to be West African and not Ethiopian.

The worship of Selassie is rooted in Jamaican black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey's 1920s prediction that a "black king shall be crowned" in Africa, ushering in a "day of deliverance." When an Ethiopian prince named Ras Tafari, who took the name Haile Selassie I, became emperor in 1930, the descendants of slaves in Jamaica took it as proof that Garvey's prophecy was being fulfilled. When Selassie came to Jamaica in 1966, he was mobbed by cheering crowds, and many Rastafarians insisted miracles and other mystical happenings occurred during his visit.

Adherents were long treated as second-class citizens in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands, looked down on for their dreadlocks and use of marijuana. But discrimination never stopped businessmen from cashing in on the faith, whose red, green and gold clothing and accessories earn millions in sales of T-shirts, crocheted caps and other items. Marley's music and the faith's pot-laced mysticism has also been used to promote Jamaica as a tourist destination

Rastafarian and veteran reggae luminary Tony Rebel said discrimination against Rastas has faded considerably in recent years in Jamaica.

"That discriminatory vibe has relaxed. But even so, we still we don't see a person with locks working in a bank these days, we don't see a person with locks in the police force as we would see in America or other places," Rebel said.

The first dreadlocked politician in Jamaica's Parliament was elected only last year.

Many Rastas advocate reparations for slavery and a return to Africa. The latter is a particularly fervent desire among those at Bobo Ashanti, who differ from other Rasta sects in the belief that their founder, King Emmanuel Charles Edwards, was the black incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Some Jamaicans dismiss the faith as bizarre.

"There is a whole part of the society that would still consider Rastafari to be delusional, and this is largely hinged on the claims made about Emperor Haile Selassie and also the consumption of (marijuana) and the idea of repatriation," Niaah said.

But for adherents like Prince Xavier, a 27-year-old Frenchman who moved to the Bobo Ashanti commune a couple of years after being introduced to Rastafarians in his native Paris, it's providing answers and a positive self-identity.

"I'm learning a lot about Rastafari and about our heritage," said the bearded Frenchman, clad in a red turban and black robe. "It is a matter of life and death."

U.N. upgrades Palestine to 'state'

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The United Nations voted overwhelmingly Thursday to recognize a Palestinian state, a long-sought victory for the Palestinians but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States.

The resolution upgrading the Palestinians' status to a nonmember observer state at the United Nations was approved by a more than two-thirds majority of the 193-member world body ? a vote of 138-9, with 41 abstentions.

A Palestinian flag was quickly unfurled on the floor of the General Assembly, behind the Palestinian delegation.

Real independence, however, remains an elusive dream until the Palestinians negotiate a peace deal with the Israelis, who warned that the General Assembly action will only delay a lasting solution. Israel still controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and access to Gaza, and it accused the Palestinians of bypassing negotiations with the campaign to upgrade their U.N. status.

The United States immediately criticized the historic vote. "Today's unfortunate and counterproductive resolution places further obstacles in the path peace," U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the speech by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the General Assembly shortly before the vote "defamatory and venomous," saying it was "full of mendacious propaganda" against Israel.

Abbas had told the General Assembly that it was "being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine." Abbas said the vote is the last chance to save the two-state solution.

After the vote, Netanyahu said the UN move violated past agreements between Israel and the Palestinians and that Israel would act accordingly, without elaborating what steps it might take.

Designing from nature could solve the world's biggest challenges

Can a boat be designed to clean the water? How does a spider manufacture resilient fiber? The world needs products that don?t harm humans or the environment, and nature?s already done the research.

By Sven Eberlein,?Yes! Magazine / November 29, 2012

A Florida Burrowing Owl perches on a post at a park in Miami. An emerging manufacturing technique called biomimicry uses nature as a model. An owl?s feathers, for example, could be mimicked to create a fabric that opens anywhere along its surface. The implications, in everything from textiles to quieter airplanes, could be staggering.

Sound impossible? Well, nature?s already completed this one. It?s called ?a plant. And the fact that it does these things safely and efficiently is inspiring engineers and designers to reconceive the ways we manufacture such basics as soap bottles, raincoats, and wall-to-wall carpeting.

Biomimicry and Cradle to Cradle, the two fields of inquiry that frame this emerging discipline, stem from the work of biologist Janine Benyus, architect William McDonough, and chemist Michael Braungart, who realized that the very models they considered key to making safer, more environmentally friendly products were sitting right before us, in the natural world.

The trio wrote two pivotal books?Benyus? "Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature" and McDonough and Braungart?s "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things"?which laid out their beliefs and touched a nerve.

"What would nature do to design lasting and regenerative materials?? asks Benyus. ?How does a river filter fresh water and a spider manufacture resilient fiber??

Braungart, picking up on the theme, wonders: ?Why aren?t we designing buildings like trees and cities like forests??

Their questions reminded readers that life is a vast web of networks, that working with, rather than dominating, nature might unleash greater possibilities. Indeed, Benyus, McDonough, and Braungart invited us to reconceive basic principles of manufacturing in ways that seemed at once radical and rudimentary.

The public embraced these concepts, and today, a decade after publication, "Cradle to Cradle" still sells? 20,000 copies annually. But when early adopters actually tried to put these principles into practice and design new products accordingly, they quickly confronted the depth and complexity of the problem: manufacturing processes shrouded in secrecy, rooted in unsustainable sourcing, and driven only by the bottom line.

Their answer: establish quality standards for those manufacturers who did want to make safe, healthy products. In the last two years, propelled by a rapid shift in public consciousness and a growing network of practitioners, both movements have made significant strides toward their goals.

In 2010, McDonough and Braungart founded the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, a nonprofit that evaluates and certifies products as safe and sustainable. In 2011, Benyus and her team launched Biomimicry 3.8, a consortium of scientists and businesspeople dedicated to collecting research and training designers and engineers around the world as certified biomimicry specialists.

Viewing nature as a source of ideas?rather than merely a source of goods?has a lengthy history among indigenous people. But Western industrial culture had mostly relegated such inquiry to the realm of obscure academic research. After Benyus?s book came out in 1997, however, corporations began to call, looking for ways they might practice what she called ?the conscious emulation of life?s genius.?

Consumer Reports: Verizon ranked the best major US carrier, AT&T ranked the worst

Nothing much has changed in this year's mobile carrier satisfaction survey from Consumer Reports, with Verizon again being rated the best of the major providers, netting good scores for voice and data service quality, staff knowledge and issue resolution. The other big players also ranked in the same order this time around, with Sprint and T-Mobile following behind Big Red, and AT&T staying in last position. None of the bottom three scored particularly highly, especially in relation to voice service quality, and only four points separated them in the ratings. While AT&T had the worst value and data service quality scores, its LTE network was ranked the best of any carrier, and the least problematic. MVNO Consumer Cellular, which piggybacks on AT&T's network, didn't disappoint after last year's overall first place finish, keeping the top spot and receiving great scores all round. Full results of the survey, which polled 63,253 subscribers, will be available in Consumer Reports' January 2013 issue.

How infidelity helps nieces and nephews

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

A University of Utah study produced new mathematical support for a theory that explains why men in some cultures often feed and care for their sisters' children: where extramarital sex is common and accepted, a man's genes are more likely to be passed on by their sister's kids than by their wife's kids.

The theory previously was believed valid only if a man was likely to be the biological father of less than one in four of his wife's children ? a number that anthropologists found improbably low.

But in the new study, University of Utah anthropology Professor Alan Rogers shows mathematically that if certain assumptions in the theory are made less stringent and more realistic, that ratio changes from one in four to one in two, so the theory works more easily.

In other words, a man's genes are more likely to be passed by his sisters' children if fewer than half of his wife's kids are biologically his ? rather than the old requirement that he had to sire fewer than a quarter of his wife's kids, according to the study published online Nov. 28 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Imagine a mutation that encourages its bearers, if they are men, to be helpful and invest resources in the children of their sisters," Rogers says. "If that man lives in a society where most of his wife's children were fathered by other men, then this gene may not be in many of his wife's children. A man really doesn't know if any of his wife's kids were fathered by him, but he knows he and his sister have the same mom. So this gene may, in fact, be in more of his sisters' children."

"Thus, over time, the frequency of this gene increases because men are increasing the survival and fitness of their sisters' children ? the ones more likely to carry the gene," he adds.

The new study "shows that it is much easier than we thought for your niece to be a closer relative than your wife's daughter," Rogers says.

The research was funded by the University of Utah.

Why Men Help their Sisters' Kids: Theory and Debate

"Men invest in children in many ways; they care for them, feed them and leave them resources when the men die," Roger says. "But in some human societies, these are the children of sisters rather than those of wives. For decades, anthropologists have wondered why."

Extramarital mating is common in some cultures, including in central Africa and South America, he says, but not in the U.S. or other Western societies where infidelity, as prevalent as seems, much is less common by comparison.

"In some societies it is expected; it isn't seen as cheating," Rogers says. "And it isn't really just about promiscuity. Even where extramarital sex isn't common, women get divorced and remarried and have households with offspring from several men."

Rogers says: "In many societies where extramarital mating is the norm, men may not share genes with the children of wives. There is less doubt about relatedness to sisters' children. This suggests an interesting hypothesis: perhaps natural selection has shaped this practice, by encouraging males to direct investment toward genetic relatives."

"There was great enthusiasm for this idea during the 1970s, until a problem came to light," he continues. "Simple calculations suggested that the explanation collapses unless men father fewer than about one in four of their wife's children. Many have doubted that the number ? the paternity threshold number ? could really be this low."

Rogers' new study shows it is much easier than that for the idea to be true ? for natural selection to favor men who help their sisters' kids. He shows the theory holds true if men father fewer than half their wife's kids rather than fewer than one-quarter of those kids ? something much more likely to happen in reality.

The study shows this mathematically by relaxing assumptions previously made as part of the uncle-caretaker theory.

Rogers says it isn't enough to take into account the probability of paternity ? the odds that a child's biological father also is his mother's husband. The new study shows that if the assumptions made in old studies are relaxed, another parameter also must be measured: "the probability a brother and sister had the same biological father. The higher that probability, the more closely related a man is to his sister and his sister's kids."

Making Old Assumptions More Realistic

Rogers examined four assumptions made in previous studies and changed them to be more realistic. In this more realistic theory, men are more likely to share genes with their sister's children than under the old theory.

The first two assumptions of the existing theory were that "women are equally receptive to extramarital affairs and that each has an infinite number of paramours," says Rogers. "These assumptions both lower estimates of relatedness between men and the children of their sisters. Relaxing either assumption increases our estimate of the fitness payoff to men who invest in children of sisters."

[Rogers notes the theory applies to a man's sisters' children, but not to his brothers' children "because your brother has no more confidence than you do about the paternity of his wife's children. Sisters are a better bet, because they know who their kids are."]

"Previous calculations assume every woman in the population is equally promiscuous," Rogers says. "If you relax that assumption and instead assume some women are more promiscuous than others, it means men are more likely to share genes with their sisters' children."

"The earlier theory also assumed women each woman had an infinite number of boyfriends," instead of a range from one to infinity, he adds. "It made the math simple ? and it gave you a wrong answer."

The new study showed mathematically that a man's relatedness to his sister's kids increases if his wife has fewer rather than more extramarital partners and if she allocates sex ? and thus having children ? unevenly among them.

A third problem with previous studies is that they assumed resources given to any child were equally valuable. Rogers says that didn't account for the fact that giving your wife's kids twice as many resources isn't necessarily twice as good ? once the kids have what they need ? but may be only half again as good for them. So the man may be better off also giving resources to his sisters' kids.

"The old model didn't account for that, and because of that, it biased things in favor of the wife's children. When the nieces and nephews share fewer genes, they end up getting zero resources rather than some reduced share, as they should."

The fourth problem with most previous calculations was that they didn't account for a simple reality: "The best thing for a man to do depends on how his wife is going to respond," Rogers says. "If wives punish their husbands one way or another for delivering goods to their nieces and nephews, it's not just the husband deciding what is best for the husband. Women have an active role in all of these decisions and that role was ignored in the previous model."

Another study published recently took that into account, making it easier to understand how natural selection might favor men who invest in their sisters' offspring.

Rogers believes that natural selection and genetics ultimately contributes to people helping their relatives in most cultures, even if the primary motivation may be tax breaks for those who provide cash gifts to relatives rather than passing on one's genes.

"People are nice to relatives all over the world, and I think selection has something to do with that," he says.

Party Proof your House this Christmas | guardNOW | A Private ...

Christmas can be the best of times and the worst of times. A time for family and friends to come together and celebrate the holidays, to eat and drink too much, to release their inhibitions and kiss someone inappropriate under the mistletoe.

But let?s get real: Christmas is one of the most stressful times of the year. This is LA. We all know the real reason that all those happy, smiley people in holiday commercials look so happy and smiley. It?s because they?re actors who got this great commercial gig for which they?re going to be paid royalties. No one else smiles like that before the holidays.

To add to the stress of the season, it?s probably time for you to hold your annual Christmas party. If so, be aware that the worst of times could mean a post-party discovery of spilt red wine on your cream couch. That gatecrashers stole valuable or sentimental items from you while you were relaxing in the bosom of your family and friends feeling safe and secure. And a clumsy guest smashed a family heirloom and hid the pieces under the wine-stained couch before they made a clean getaway.

But it doesn?t have to be that way.

No, your party doesn?t have to read like a depressing home insurance commercial after the burglars have ransacked your house and the gravel- voiced announcer lets you know that all is well because you?re covered by JoeBlow Insurance. Not if you read these wise words to prevent mayhem occurring in your home and your vow to never, never, ever hold a party again.? Ever. (Sorry?that annoying Taylor Swift song is running through my head on a loop?).

?Holiday Safety Tips

If you have friends or acquaintances that are shy, try to convince them to stay by your entrance all night to stop random strangers, or worse, thieves from entering your home. Simply give them a guest list and put them to work. If you think this is mean, and your introverted friend might get chilly or lonely, hire a security guard or two and really scare off any gatecrashing bad guys with evil-doing on their minds. It can be extremely reassuring to have buff security guards holding guest lists at your front door. Also security guards can patrol discreetly to ensure nothing untoward is going on, such as anyone stealing your priceless collection of CDS or iPod dock with six surround-sound speakers. Or to lend a hand if an inebriated guest is getting out-of-control.

At the risk of seeming like a Party-Throwing-Pooper, adding signs that read,

?Private,? ?Do Not Touch,? and ?No Smoking? can help guests know your rules and prevent them from wandering around your home.

Place valuable or sentimental objects that you don?t want broken or stolen in locked rooms and add an ?Off Limits? sign on the door.? If you really don?t trust your guests, your signs could read, ?Keep Out!? and ?Danger!? and be circled by images of ominous-looking skull-and-crossbones.

Make sure your furry friends are in a safe, secure place with food and water, so no one is able to harm them or let them out. Also, try to keep them as far away from the noise as possible ? their ears are much more sensitive than ours, and they get stressed out by too much noise.? Just remember ? animals are people too.

Have napkins or paper towels handy. Guests often spill drinks, and having these available makes for an easy cleanup. As much as possible, plan to protect your house from spills, dirt, and other damage

Although not elegant, plastic cups are more practical than glassware. The fewer items that can be broken, the better.? But if you?re holding a Martha Stewart kind of party, where you bring out the best crystal, try doing a lot of deep breathing.

?Don?t be a Christmas Tree Fire Statistic

Every year, we hear on the news about all those people who are mostly quite sensible the rest of the year, whose Christmas trees caught fire. Don?t become one of them!? Never use lighted candles near trees, boughs, curtains/drapes, or with any potentially flammable item. Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources.? If you use an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire-resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Only use indoor lights indoors. (Look for the UL label.) Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs, around furniture legs or across doorways. If using a natural tree, make sure it is well watered to avoid dry branches from catching fire from the heat of light bulbs. ?Fire extinguishers may seem like overkill, but the ability to quickly tackle a small fire before it gets out of control is a small investment. And make sure they are working, visible and accessible.

In the worst-case scenario, if you do have to call the fire department, and if? you?re a single woman (or a gay man), here?s hoping he?s single and cute, and, of course, prevents any fire damage. This goes for all couples ? straight and gay ? too (just the last part though)!

Wishing you all a Safe and Happy Christmas Party!

Healthy Skin Care Tips | Shannon Miller Lifestyle

Posted In: Health & Wellness : 11/28/2012

Author: Shannon Miller Lifestyle

Did you know ? November is Healthy Skin Month?

Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and says so much about your health. It reads in strength and vibrance. It shows weariness, tiredness, or lack of good nutrition. Your skin is what people see as your overall health and vitality.

So, how do we improve the health of our skin?

We start with the inside! Sally Kravich, Holistic Nutritionist and author of the book Vibrant Living, says ?Beauty begins from the inside out. Often, we look to external products to make us feel and look more beautiful. Natural products and regular skin care is beneficial, but beautiful skin begins with the food and liquids we eat and drink.
In Chinese medicine the skin is considered the third kidney. In order to keep the skin alive and healthy, you will want to open the skins pores by sweating and drink plenty of pure water.?

What does that mean?

Sweating through exercise cleans out the pores of the skin, and gives the skin a healthy glow. Drinking plenty of water keeps the skin looking dewy and young. Katherine Goldman, aesthetician and owner of Stript Wax Bar in Los Angeles says 120 ounces of water per day is optimal for skin health.

Internally, vitamins and minerals help with skin health and elasticity.

Nancy Reagan, ?First Lady of Skin Care?, pun intended, says that Vitamin A in the diet is important (available through red and orange-hued vegetables), and ?B vitamins are not stored in the tissues so they must be constantly replenished. Minerals are also being used to support the skin with hydration and immune support (Chloride, Zinc, Potassium). Healthy skin comes from within so not only are topical vitamins necessary, but internal vitamins are very important. With that being said, the nutritional support for healthy skin includes a diet void of chemicals, preservatives, and dairy.? A diet high in processed foods, like canned and boxed foods, brings chemicals into the body, which break down the skin cell structure over time. Natural, whole ingredients are easily used as fuel for the skin?s health, with easy accessibility to natural vitamins and minerals. So, hit the farmer?s market or organic fruit stand whenever possible.

On the external side of skin, a healthy regimen is also important.

Once or twice a week,? you can polish your skin by buffing it lightly, which takes off the dead skin cells that may be sitting at the top. The result is the younger skin underneath glowing through, and the apparent reduction of lines.?

Candice Betz, Director of W Austin?s AWAY Spa?in Austin, Texas, recommends a Pumpkin Facial Scrub to keep skin healthy:

? cup organic canned pumpkin

3 Tablespoons organic sugar

? teaspoon sweet almond oil

Mix and scrub. Put the remaining amount in the refrigerator until further use.

What are some of your favorite healthy skin care tips or products? If you have a tip for healthy skin that you?d like to share, please add a comment.

Large Hadron Collider may have produced a previously undetected form of matter

Large Hadron Collider may have produced previously unconfirmed form of matter

Teams at the Large Hadron Collider must be developing a knack for producing tangible evidence of theoretical particles. After orchestrating 2 million collisions between lead nuclei and protons, like the sort you see above, the collider's Compact Muon Solenoid group and researchers at MIT suspect that stray, linked pairs of gluon particles in the mix were signs of color-glass condensate, a currently theory-only form of matter that sees gluons travel in liquid-like, quantum-entangled waves. The clues aren't definitive, but they were also caught unexpectedly as part of a more routine collision run; the team is curious enough that it's looking for more evidence during weeks of similar tests in January. Any conclusive proof of the condensate would have an impact both on how we understand particle production in collisions as well as the ways gluons and quarks are arranged inside protons. If so, the CMS and MIT teams may well answer a raft of questions about subatomic physics while further justifying CERN's giant underground rings.

In the framework of his official visit to Lebanon, President Serzh Sargsyan met with President Michel Suleiman

?

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan has arrived to the Republic of Lebanon of the official visit

At the residence of the President of Lebanon, after the official ceremony of welcoming the President of Armenia, Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Michel Suleiman conducted private negotiations which were followed by the negotiations in the extended format with the participation of the delegations of the two states.

After the negotiations, there took place the ceremony of signing official documents. In particular, signed were Agreements on the ?Visa free regime for the holders of diplomatic and service passports? and ?Mutual recognition of the higher education and academic titles.?

After the ceremony of document signing, President Serzh Sargsyan planted a tree in the Presidential Garden as a token of the Armenian-Lebanese friendship.

At the Presidential residence, the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the President of the Republic of Lebanon Michel Suleiman recapped the results of the negotiations at the joint press conference.

?

***
Statement by President Serzh Sargsyan at the joint press conference with the President of Lebanon Michel Suleiman

?

?Dear Mr. President,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I once again express my thanks to President Suleiman for the invitation to visit the friendly Lebanon and warm welcome extended to the delegation of Armenia. Last year, at the 20th anniversary of Armenia?s independence, we had the honor to host the President of Lebanon in Armenia. This year, the President of the Republic of Armenia is conducting an official visit to Lebanon; the regularity of these visits speaks about the high-level dialogue established between our two countries, high-level relations of our two countries, and the desire to further deepen these relations.

Moments ago, we held productive negotiations with President Suleiman: we have discussed opportunities of engaging new areas in the Armenian-Lebanese cooperation, exchanged views on the international, particularly, Middle East and South Caucasus developments. We have also reiterated that our relations are based on good will, mutual trust and respect.

This year is special, since we mark the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. We have noted with satisfaction that the interparliamentary, cultural, educational and scientific ties have been established, signed were over three dozens of documents, whose number will be augmented during this visit, or to be more precise, has already been augmented by two.

We have agreed to use every opportunity to boost our bilateral economic cooperation. We are glad that in the recent period presence of Lebanon in our economy has become more visible.

I have told President Suleiman about the importance we attach to the cooperation with Lebanon on the international arena. In forming its positions, Armenia takes into consideration pan-Arabic interests and interests of Lebanon in particular.

We are deeply concerned with the situation in Syria and with the fate of the Armenians living there. At the gravest time in our history, the people of Syria had heartily received hundred of thousands of the Armenians, and their pain is our pain.

Armenia has always expressed the viewpoint that the bloodshed must stop. We are against the use of force and violence, and not only in Syria. It is impossible to reach a durable resolution without cessation of all clashes from all sides or without a comprehensive political dialogue, which will take into consideration interests of all Syrians. Armenia welcomes the mission of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General and Arab League, Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, aimed at the stabilization of the internal situation and establishment of peace.

Please be assured that if the mentioned above initiatives are called to life, there will be peace in Syria and in the nearest future it will be possible to implement democratic reforms which will reflect the collective will and aspirations of all segments of the Syrian people.

We have also spoken about the NK conflict resolution. We have reiterated that in the South Caucasus, Armenia continues to conduct a policy aimed at the establishment of peace and stability in the region. We rule out any possibility of the use of force and remain true to our commitment to solve the problem through the negotiations with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group. Unfortunately, the neighboring Azerbaijan rejects every proposal of the Minsk Group aimed at the confidence building and continues an unprecedented accumulation of weapons, preparing its people for a new war. It is gaudily proved by pardon extended to the murderer Safarov by the President of Azerbaijan and his glorification. It constitutes the continuation of the murder, conducted on ethnic grounds, and presents a telling example of xenophobia and racism.

The Armenians and Lebanese have always stood out for their love for peace. Today too, we have concurred with President Suleiman that changes which reflect the will of the people should be implemented through peaceful means, without use of force, without victims, without terrorism. We learned with great sorrow the news of a terrorist act in Beirut on October 19 and did not hesitate to condemn such a repulsive act which, we hope, will not shatter peace in Lebanon. Present situation in the Middle East is tightly linked to the security of Armenia. We are deeply interested in a speedy resolution of the existing problems and are ready to assist the process within the limits of our capabilities.

In conclusion, I wish that the historical procession of our brotherly nations will be incessant and upward. Let peace, justice and optimism be our constant companions.?
